Salt Spring Island Housing Council
The Housing Council was created in 2011 following many years of community conversation and research about the affordable housing crisis on Salt Spring Island. The 2008 Housing Needs Assessment provided a clear picture of Salt Spring’s housing challenges, which since then have only been exacerbated by the skyrocketing housing market and the more recent work-from-home trend. In 2010-2011 the CRD, Islands Trust, SSI Foundation and Real Estate Foundation of B.C. supported the development of an affordable housing strategy. The Salt Spring Island Foundation’s community needs survey conducted in 2021 also found affordable housing to be a top priority for island residents.
Currently re-grouping after COVID impacts, the Housing Council is developing a new strategic direction while it advocates for the creation of equitable and affordable housing on Salt Spring Island by:
- Working with stakeholders to encourage and facilitate the development of affordable housing
- Facilitating partnerships with individuals, organizations and funders
- Providing advice to representatives of local, regional and provincial government agencies
- Hosting a once a month information sharing meeting for all providers of housing and housing policy holders.
